Heavy Spoon

The best ____ you ever made.

Heavy Spoon

The best ____ you ever made.

Heavy Spoon

Heavy Spoon is named after my favorite cooking utensil: an old, metal, heavy spoon that has been in my 98 year-old grandmother's house for as long as I can remember. I could safely assume that it is older than I am. For me, it embodies a lot of the important concepts around food such as family, tradition and simplicity and for that reason is a very fitting name for this blog.

Heavy Spoon has many inspirations, from friends who have asked the method for making pasta ("Does the pasta go in before the water?"), to kitchen savvy family and friends who inquire about our recipes.

Our goal is to provide easy, go-to recipes layered with information to enhance the skills set of the home chef. We believe that recipes should be

  • As simple as possible: Exotic ingredients are no fun. They can explode the cost of the dish and with limited impact on flavor. As anyone who has been to an overpriced brunch spot can attest, it is better to taste good than have a fancy ingredient list, and the two are mutually exclusive.
  • As quick as possible: One of the main reasons people don't cook is time. With busy schedules and general fatigue from the work, cooking can sometimes seem like a daunting task. We place our focus on recipes that allow you to prepare food relatively quickly. If cooking takes less of a chunk of the day, it is easier to do often, and we're all for that. We aim to have our recipes be as short, and where possible have engineered them to reduce cooking time. After all, if it is quicker to order-in, why not just order in?
  • As delicious as possible: We research and test everything to ensure that whatever you cook from us will be the best ____ you ever made.

Lauren

She definitely knows, "what not to do," when baking. After having many catastrophes which lead to hard inedible bread she was finally given her first bread cook book at the age of eight. Since then she has been baking soft, edible goods that fill the house with beautiful, caloric smells.

When she is not kneading dough she is discovering and exploring other heat transfer principles in the environment as an engineer.
